Citizen Kane? Reviewing it for what it isn't even trying to be is unfair. This is a young persons and non cynical older persons whimsical monsters and armies movie.
I don't expect the Actors to go all out deep emotion trying for an oscar on this, it would have then sucked if any part had taken itself too seriously.
But it achieved a nice balance of 'hey look at this crazy stuff' and 'oh ok heres some reason that crazy stuff just happened'.
Really not much dialogue, just enough to fill the gaps. If you just want to see some monsters and armies battle scenes this should be fine as a rental.
I am pretty sure it is not trying to do either. There is like a 20 minute short film worth of space for story and dialogue in between all the swords and arrows and teeth.
For me that is fine, they could take 30 years trying to rationally explain weird lizard armies attacking the great wall of China and I would likely still be calling BS.
I don't feel like they tried to convince me so much as just offer a story for me to accept and enjoy or not, in a respectful dont take it serious just have fun way.
So I did, I didn't take it serious and I had fun watching it. I cannot fathom how people can expect enough from this movie to find a complaint with it.
Monsters attack great wall of China, what in that says expect deep plot and characters? This is a solid four-star action movie - I'm happy I watched it, but I'm not going to think about it ever again, except when I think about ridiculously impractical-but-awesomely-cool-looking Crane Fu.
If you try to engage your brain, you will find flaws, never be able to stop, and hate this movie. If you let the experience wash over you, you'll enjoy it.
Be a leaf on the wind. The choreography is outrageous and really enjoyable. The costumes and sets are colorful and pleasingly ornate.
They only need to deliver the lines well enough to make the scenes move forward, and Matt and Pedro do better than that.
I'm surprised how little mileage the story got out of heavy weights Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau. I didn't even know Dafoe was in this movie so I'm not sure how much of a ticket effect his name provided.
I also didn't realize Eddie Peng was in this movie until the credits - good to see that rising star get into something big, but too bad his character didn't do anything interesting.
Eddie Peng needs to play Spike in the live action Cowboy Bebop, amarite? I do not like having to buy a 2D version and then, later, buying a 3D version because I did not know if a 3D version would be issued.
It would be better if Amazon would research that information and include it in the description of the item s. Special effects and locations were spectacular.
Picture, color, clarity, and surround sound effects, great. Do Not let critics dissuade you from viewing this film. The story line is consistent, the characters are fluid, there may be some cliches but what the hell, even Star Wars had a few.
You won't be disappointed, this is a solid action and bonafide sci-fi thriller with lots of fire breathing and eye-goaging monster gore.

They get captured and eventually help defend the Great Wall from invading "creatures". Great action, good acting, believable plot and scary creatures make for a very good "I want to get away from reality" film.
