It stars Michael Caine in one of his most iconic perfomances. And features at least 2 of his most famous lines ever.
I think you know what they are by now. Plus the film stars Benny Hill! And he's great here, even though it's only a small role.
And there's Noel Coward, who is great as the mob boss who directs the entire enterprise from his jail cell. In the end, the reasons why this movie is so much better than the cruddy remake are clear.
Most of the seeds for the Austin Powers movies were sown here. It's kind of campy, in a very British way, and is more than a bit funny.
While the remake, on the other hand, is much grittier, darker, and has all of the campy humor drained out of it just to make a stupid action film.
Remember that turkey? The Mini's make an appearance just to keep one strand of thread connected to the original.
It's not good enough. This one, however, is more than good enough. It's great. If you like Michael Caine, or car movies, or classic '60's British cinema, or you just prefer the original to the remake, Memo to Hollywood: Stop with the remakes and reboots!
Come up with some original ideas for once! Sometimes you just can't top the original. The Italian Job was a unique film. Released in it was a mix of a crime heist story, a comedy, and 60s swag starring Michael Caine as the criminal mastermind Charlie Croker.
With the backing of British crime lord Mr. His friend planned the job but was killed by the mafia for doing so.
Croker decides to complete it. Croker embodies the swag. He gets out of prison and gets a brand new wardrobe of the latest suits.
He was a playboy criminal. The heist was a work of genius. The escape would become iconic as it used Mini Coopers. Added bonus there were plenty of car stunts with the Minis.
The jokes are everywhere. Croker for example breaks into prison to talk to Mr. Bridger while he goes the bathroom to try to get his backing for the heist.
He plays a lecher who has a thing for big women. I can't help but think that many people feel compelled to give this movie a high rating simply because Michael Caine is in it.
In judging the film on its own merits, and in its entirety, I can't give it more than two stars. The majority of this movie's running time makes On Golden Pond seem action packed by comparison; the plot is painfully constipated until about the three-quarter mark.
In any case, the comedy seems forced and it appears that Collinson the director was trying a little too hard to keep the scenes engaging, which only ended up making them needlessly protracted and overacted.
On the positive side: I would say it's worth watching once Until recently I didn't even know this version existed. The idea in both this and the version is the stealing of just over bars of gold bullion using 3 Mini cars.
Some of the character names are the same, but other than those minor similarities, the two movies are very different.
I didn't like the ending of this version at all, because it stops in the middle of the story, and they leave you wondering what happened.
No sequel was forthcoming, so you will never know. If you like to make up your own ending, this movie may be for you.
Otherwise, don't bother. Watch the version instead. The film industry likes to remake classic films, they think they can assure return on investment at the box office.
If it worked for them it will work for us. This, True Grit and The Poseidon Adventure are good examples of films they shouldn't have messed with. The setup, the training and the execution of the raid are all well done.
The getaway chase scene is classic. It isn't a modern day exploding cars escape, and I hesitate to call it realistic, but it was filmed on location.
But they trashed a lot of minis doing it. Best of all there's no horrific attempt at an English accent by a sad American.
This was one of my all-time favorite movies until I saw the remake. The real action begins about 50 minutes into the film. But it's not really great until the last 15 minutes.
Quincy Jones' music is great, and I love the theme song. If you have access to Amazon's x-ray feature, you'll find Michael Caine's idea for an alternate ending.
