I think the story gives one a good idea of just how much change occurred when the Iron Curtain fell over Eastern Europe and the difficulties and opportunities it brought.

The story revolves around Alex, his sister and their mother. Their mother has a heart attack and then goes into a coma.

During her coma, communism fell and then she wakes up. Advised by her doctor that she cannot take any form of excitement, Alex goes about creating the illusion that communism is alive and well.

This often takes a comical twist on the differences between the communist east and capitalist west. There is also the subtle hint of discrimination by both sides against the other.

In the end the story is about family and loved ones and what we are willing to do to make those around us happy. Go out and rent this movie.

But the world has changed a lot. Two traumatic events affect the life of East Berliner, Christiane Kerner. First, in , her husband, Robert, runs off to freedom and another woman in the west, leaving her to take care of their two adolescent children, Ariane and Alex, by herself.

Always a good Socialist, Christiane devotes her life to the cause as a symbol of anger toward her husband. And second, in , she sees a now grown Alex marching in an anti-Berlin Wall demonstration and being hauled off by police.

As a result, she suffers a heart attack and goes into a coma. While Christiane is in her coma, Germany drastically changes with the Wall coming down and the imminent official reunification of East and West into one.

The Kerner's personal life also changes with all aspects of the new found capitalist world infiltrating their home.

When Christiane emerges from her coma eight months later, her health situation is still tenuous. Ariane quickly adopts the new Western ideals and lifestyle, but Alex experiences nostalgia for their former way of life.

Ostalgie is a neologism for the nostalgia for a communist past which is a common theme in Good Bye, Lenin! In the New York Times commented on "Ostalgie" which was embodied in the town of Eisenhüttenstadt.

This put a lot of light on the ostalgie situation, in addition to the film. Empire gave the film four stars out of five with a verdict of, "An ingenious little idea that is funny, moving and—gasp!
