Man nehme ein bisschen, Bloodsport, ein bisschen Mortal Kombat und noch ein Paar Szenen aus anderen Filmen, rühre sie um ubnd du bekommst Lady Bloodfight.

Had some great moments. The film reminded me a little of Raze. The one thing that kind of threw me was how happy the ending was.

I expected a 'good' ending but not that happy, maybe it was just me. All in all this film checked a lot of the right boxes for me.

These low budget wonders magically transported us to faraway lands where the terms 'kumite', 'kickboxer' and 'bad acting' were order of the day and revenge was the only option.

Thankfully, those halcyon days don't seem to too far behind as this gem proves - delivering the goods like an overeager puppy with expert fight choreography and a screenplay so stupid, you would mistakenly believes its the '90s all over again.

I really liked this movie. Directed by Chris Nahon, who many years before helmed the excellent Jet Li actioner ''Kiss of the Dragon'' here works with a much tighter budget, but still manages to evoke a certain beauty between the bone breaking.

Sure, everything is stripped down the Kumite itself seems to be a floor mat situated between two shipping containers but the movie is well shot by Michel Abramowicz - who elevates the scenery with natural lighting perfectly in symmetry with Nahon's framing.

The screenplay by former 'Impact Magazine' editor Bey Logan and Judd Bloch is a fairly routine 'Bloodsport' homage but thankfully the direction and cast make it all worthwhile.

Lead Amy Johnston whom I also enjoyed in the randomly titled 'Female Fight Squad' is great - giving a layered performance and if honest, she's one to watch.

Now, if only we could get that 'China O'Brien' sequel I've always been longing for - Amy would be great.

Also, kudos to Mayling Ng as the villainous Svietta - who chews each and every scene she appears. Think 'Kickboxer's' Tong Po and you're on the right lines to her character and appearance.

The movie also does a good job of showing the cast fighting - sure, they are balletic and on point but it also shows the reality of the damage they endure.

Its not as precision perfect as an early Van Damme flick for example - here the brawling is raw and bloody and you see how the fighters deal with the aftermath.

Only issue the movie had was the tonal shifts between empowering its cast and then quickly adding a 'girls in the locker room' sequence, which was obviously added to keep us guys watching.

Hey, I like the female form as much as the next guy, but seriously it wasn't needed. We can make it through 90 minutes without having to see someone semi-nude.

It was an odd decision especially with the twangy guitar riff soundtrack but it was only a minor misstep in an otherwise satisfying martial arts actioner.

Strangely, this was only one off a few movies where I would have enjoyed a making of documentary but sadly not to be. Even though the story is simply another bout of 'Bloodsport' ripoffery - the expert direction, solid cast and well choreographed fight sequences keep this one firing on all cylinders.

Unfortunately, her father went to fight in the Kumite in Hong Kong when she was a little girl. Determined to honor him by winning the women's version of the Kumite and also to hopefully find out what happened to him, she endeavors to head to Hong Kong herself.

While there she is mentored by an Asian fighter Shu who completes her training. In normal Jean Claude van Damme "formula" fighting movies of this sort, the "good" fighter is extremely likeable while the ultimate opponent is an evil.

While the former is true of this movie and Amy Johnston is very believable as a woman who has a good heart , the latter is not.

There is a fighter who is a merciless killer, but she is not where you think she will be in the plot line. That forms a nice twist.
