It is not only a crime movie, but also a korean style comedy! Love it! Excellent work by an outstanding filmmaker of our time. Unpredictable and thoroughly engrossing, pulling you in deeper and deeper.

This film is based upon real events that occurred between and in South Korea. It was their first known serial killer case. My beef with the movie is that it did not know when to be serious and when to be comedic.

In addition, the comedy was too slapstick and painted a picture that the cops were bumbling idiots. Maybe they were inept and lacked modern forensic skills but they could not have been the keystone cops.

The acting and cinematography were superb. The movie also painted a picture of South Korea as being a misogynistic culture as women were treated as inferior to men, especially a lady cop.

Der studierte Neuling ist den beiden Rauhbeinen von Anfang an ein Dorn im Auge, zumal er all ihre Verdächtige, die sie durch psychischen Terror und nackte Gewalt zu einem Geständnis bewegen, durch unwiderlegbare Deduktionen entlastet.

Ohne die Jagd nach dem Täter zu sehr aus den Augen zu verlieren, gelingt es dem Regisseur mit diesem Film nämlich, ein nuanciertes Bild der Ermittler zu zeichnen, die uns zwar nicht wirklich sympathisch werden, dabei aber auch nicht zu platten Abziehbildern geraten.

In der Folge verlegt Park seine Ermittlungen dann auf Saunabesuche, wo er den Männern aus beruflichem Interesse auf die untere Körpermitte starrt.

Ein weiterer Höhepunkt seiner Ermittlungen besteht in dem Besuch bei einer Wahrsagerin, die ihm einen Zauberspruch verkauft, mit dessen Hilfe sich das Gesicht des Täters auf einem Blatt Papier abzeichnen soll.

Diese absurden Töne dienen jedoch stimmig der Charakterisierung einer der Hauptfiguren, ohne den Film ins Komödienfach abgleiten zu lassen.

Ein weiterer überzeugender Kunstgriff Bongs sind visuelle Symbole, allem voran Schuhe, die in der Handlung eine besondere Rolle spielen werden und die oftmals eine tragische Bedeutung erlangen.
