Marion Cotillard is basically flawless as usual. Together they make this great movie. The end. While I like parts of this movie as a whole it is kind of a weak suspense drama.
It leaves the audience wanting a lot more. It is hard to imagine a man of Brad Pitt's Intelligence being so duped in this film.
You never get that edge of your seat tension that a good thriller movie has. It felt like a chore to get through the whole movie.
There wasn't a ton of evidence to dispute who his wife says she is in the film. You don't get to see her go behind her husbands' back or really be sneaky in much regard.
So how are you supposed to really question her loyalty? The film kind of reminded me of another dreary film I saw recently The good shepard with Matt Damon directed by robert Deniro which on paper had an excellent cast but kind of fizzled and went nowhere.
It is nothign special. There are better films out there dealing with the same subject matter such as "No Way Out" with Kevin Costner.
By no means am I a professional movie critic, but I know from a layman's point of view if a film is good or not. And this film is good.
Other's who didn't like it say that Brad Pitt's performance was bland; I totally disagree. I saw it as a directorial decision to play his character in this waya calm, mild-mannered man who in a moments notice could be lethal; yet I truly believed he loved his wife.
And she him. Their relationship is what pulled me in and kept me involved. Their acting was superb. But what I truly loved about this movie was the human aspectthe drama of their child's birth, the love of parents for a child, the domestic satisfying life they had, and her sacrificial love for her husband.
Why is this so often overlooked or under appreciated by critics and movie goers alike? I haven't cried in a movie in a long time, but this one made me cry.
Especially in the end, when she wrote the letter to her daughter and described her husband as her world. This movie was full of depth of emotion. And made any weakness that it may or may not have had, worthwhile.
It will long stay with me. The British did a good job in turning German spies in England. The counter intelligence officer would have offered a deal to turn the German spy, which would have worked for husband, wife and England.
Very unlikely that the story would have ended as it did. Also very unlikely for the assignation of the ambassador, too messy.
